A house with history

Tobaksgaarden opened its doors as a cultural center in 2004, but the building has an exciting history.
It was originally built as a tobacco factory under tobacco manufacturer Georg Gundersen, who took over the property in 1880 and started tobacco production in 1883. For many years, Tobaksgaarden was an important workplace in Assens until the factory moved out in the 1990s.

The buildings were then handed over to the municipality for a symbolic sum, and thanks to a great local effort with support from foundations, associations and businesses, Tobaksgaarden was reborn as a cultural center.
Today, the building has approximately 3,000 m² with a cinema, music and theater hall, exhibition rooms, meeting rooms and café – and serves as a gathering place for the entire city and its guests.
